How many of the people you were friends with when you were a child are still your friends? And if that friendship was just for the cameras, then what happens after the cameras are gone? Miley Cyrus and Emily Osment are in this curious predicament, as the two actresses played BFFs growing up in the Disney hit Hannah Montana.
But, do they get along these days? And why was Osment not involved with the Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special? Here’s everything we know.

Reportedly, the two didn’t really get along during their time on the show. But reports indicate the two are way past that as adults. Osment spoke about her relationship with Cyrus back then, a few years ago, on the Chicks in the Office podcast, saying, “I mean, Miley used to come with me to my school dances and, like, nobody knew who she was and then immediately everything changed,” she shared, reflecting on the show’s success. “And that was very strange.”
Meanwhile, Cyrus said in her autobiography, Miles to Go, as per Insider, that the two were made to compete against each other, saying that even if they“tried to be friends, we really did, but it always ended in a fight.”
Osment discussed her time on the show during a recent interview with Variety, saying so much of the time on Hannah Montana coincided with her own high school experience. “So when I think back on it, I think about growing up and going to school. It’s not so much about the show,” the actress said. And well, that comes with complicated friendships.
But Osment’s absence from the Hannah Montana reunion had nothing to do with any lingering bad feelings regarding Cyrus. Instead, she missed the reunion due to her commitment to her CBS show Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, a spinoff of Big Bang Theory spinoff Young Sheldon.
On a post on Instagram, she said, “Hannah Montana changed my life, it gave me a lifelong respect for this medium of comedy, it taught me discipline, patience, timing and respect working in an adult space so young. I’ve met thousands of HM fans over the years, fans that now have children watching this show and fans that literally work beside me every day, like Montana. He’s seen every episode, don’t be fooled. I can’t tell you what your sweet messages mean to me and how lucky I feel to have been apart of this once in a generation goliath of a television show. Thank you for letting me into your living rooms and I hope to still be there many years from now. Would never be where I am without you guys, working on another beautiful show I love so dearly. With all my heart, THANK YOU! ♥️ Lilly”
On the video, on which she appears alongside costar Montana Jordan, Osment jokes, “Did you know that tomorrow is the 20-year anniversary? That’s how old I am.”
“We’re at the Georgie & Mandy set, and that’s why I was not able to be a part of the 20-year reunion,” she continued. “I wanted to say hello and thank you to everybody that has stuck by us for all these years. I’m so grateful that you guys all still love this show. I’m so proud to be a part of it.”
No hard feelings. Just a lot of work.
