Tom Cruise might not be as vocal about his ties to Scientology these days, but that doesn’t mean the actor, who at one point became something akin to the face of the controversial religion, is no longer a Scientologist. In fact, his recent behavior seems to prove he is still very much involved.

Cruise proved that as he was photographed in the front row at The Church of Scientology’s annual event to celebrate the birthday of their founder, L. Ron Hubbard. The event was held at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater, Florida, on Saturday, March 14. Pictures from the event were shared by The Church of Scientology and reviewed by OK! Magazine and Scientology whistleblower Tony Ortega’s Substack, The Underground Bunker.

The Mission Impossible actor smiled and clapped as the church’s current leader, David Miscavige, took to the stage. Other celebrities present at the event included John Travolta, and Bodhi and Jenna Elfman.

Cruise stopped speaking publicly about his ties to Scientology in the late 2000s, per Today.

“I think Tom Cruise learned his lesson with the discussion and uproar around Scientology that happened many years ago,” Evan Nierman, founder of Red Banyan crisis PR, told Us Weekly last year. “He’s been very effective at not shining a light on that and instead letting the power of his films and his stunt work speak for itself.”

But that doesn’t mean Cruise has distanced himself from the church. Instead, some speculate it’s a strategic decision. Marc Headley, a former Scientologist, told the outlet, “[Tom’s] been in a decades-long bromance with a controversial man [David Miscavige],” adding, “Who cares if he still runs fast and jumps off stuff? I suspect the more people knew about Tom Cruise’s close relationship with Scientology, the less they would spend supporting him and his activities.”

Still, the actor has been present at other Scientology events in the past few years, like last year’s Scientology’s annual Patrons Ball.

The actor made headlines last year after his split from his girlfriend, Ana de Armas. The actress, who was much younger than Cruise, reportedly ended the relationship. A source at the time described the breakup as “a collision between her freedom and his relentless discipline.” They added, “Ana’s very independent. She wanted a genuine relationship, not something that felt like an arrangement. Eventually, she began ignoring his calls for days, and that’s when everything started to unravel.”

Cruise reportedly didn’t take it well. “He’s going around saying he was the one who ended things, but it’s clear he’s in pain,” RadarOnline reported. “One day, he insists it’s her loss, the next he’s wondering if he’ll ever meet someone who really gets him. He’s uneasy, isolated, and overthinking everything.”

“He doesn’t like it when things fall apart unexpectedly,” one source explained. “This relationship wasn’t just another Hollywood fling — he really saw a future with her.”

No mention of Scientology at all, but one does have to wonder if the controversial religion played a part in their breakup. Particularly considering the proof Cruise is still very much involved.
