It’s always so hard to accept how life moves on after a tragedy. In so many ways, it feels like it shouldn’t. But it’s impossible to stop the passage of time. And that’s exactly what’s happened over two months after Nancy Guthrie disappeared. Her family is still grieving and still desperately looking for answers, but the world has kept turning. And now, Savannah Guthrie has returned to the Today show amid new speculation about the people in charge of the investigation.

Fox News Digital recently reported that Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos was once detained at a local airport by TSA agents for allegedly carrying a loaded, undeclared firearm in his carry-on bag. The incident reportedly took place on Nov. 6, 2024.

The incident report obtained by the outlet shows that a TSA X-ray technician saw the weapon in the sheriff’s bag at Tucson International Airport. Nanos was taken to a private screening room, where the gun was located. It had five rounds in the magazine and another round in the chamber.

This particular incident was apparently discussed during Nanos’ race for Sheriff in 2024, which he won against former PCSD Lt. Heather Lappin.  A woman named Cory Stephens complained to the county board of supervisors at a public meeting on Nov. 12, 2024, that Nanos did not face the same consequences as anyone else would have.

“If a private citizen had encountered that at the airport, the consequences would have been greater,” she told Fox News Digital.

The incident did not result in any charges for Nanos. There has been a renewed push for transparency after the investigation into Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance has yielded no suspects and no clear motive, more than two weeks after Savannah Guthrie’s mom was abducted from her house at night.

“We as citizens want answers,” Stephens said. “The safety of our community is at stake.”

All of this comes after Savannah Guthrie shared an Easter message amid the continued search for her mother. “We celebrate today the promise of a new life that never ends in death,” she said in a video message during Good Shepherd New York’s Easter livestream. “But standing here today, I have to tell you, there are moments in which that promise seems irretrievably far away. When life itself seems far harder than death. These moments of deep disappointment with God, the feeling of utter abandonment.”

Guthrie continued, “I have questioned whether Jesus really ever experienced this particular wound that I feel,” she shared, “this grievous and uniquely cruel injury of not knowing, of uncertainty and confusion and answers withheld.”

She added, “Our comfort is that our God has felt those feelings from a perspective of humanity,” she said. “That he has compassion on us and that he promises, if not immediate answers, his sweet presence.”

“I still believe,” she concluded. “And so I say with conviction, happy Easter.”

Guthrie was back on the Today show the day after Easter, and briefly commented on her return after the top news of the day. “Pretty shot of the sun coming up. Good morning, welcome to Today on this Monday morning, we are so glad you started your week with us, and it’s good to be home,” she said on air.

Later, as Melvin pointed out the crow in the plaza, she said, “Some beautiful signs out there. I’m excited to see them, give them all a hug. I’ve been really feeling the love so much.”
