No matter who you are, preparing for a meeting with US President Donald Trump is probably a complicated thing. The President is, after all, known for his volatile temper and for holding grudges. So new reports that King Charles is planning his state visit to the US very carefully are probably not surprising.
RadarOnline is reporting that the King is “caught between a rock and a hard place” amid the planned visit because of strained relations between Washington and London due to disagreements over the U.S. military strategy in Iran. So, will Trump’s issues with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer mean the state visit won’t happen?

A source said, “From where things stand, the King is genuinely caught between a rock and a hard place, because there is no outcome here that does not come with serious implications. Every option on the table carries a degree of political and diplomatic risk.”
Trump has criticized Starmer, saying he is “no Winston Churchill.” But the U.S. President has long spoken about his admiration for the British royals and has referred to King Charles as a friend. So, what’s King Charles to do?
“If he goes ahead with the visit, there is a concern it could be interpreted as lending quiet support to a highly contentious moment in U.S. politics, which could draw criticism at home and abroad,” an insider explained. “But if he pulls back, there is an equally strong expectation that Trump would respond very forcefully, potentially escalating matters in public and putting further strain on relations.”
To stay or to go? “There is a strong sense among those involved that Trump will ‘go nuclear’ if the visit is ultimately canceled, and that reaction would likely be immediate and very public,” sources said.
Charles has also been expected to use the visit to the United States to reunite with his other son, Prince Harry, and see his grandchildren, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, for the first time in years. So, there’s a personal interest in keeping to the schedule.
But the political considerations are enormous, as well. “The expectation is that Trump would not hold back in assigning responsibility if Charles stops his visit, and would almost certainly point the finger at Starmer and the British government, framing it as a political slight rather than a diplomatic decision.” And the situation in Iran doesn’t look like it’ll get better anytime soon.
UK politicians have been clear. Ed Davey, leader of the Liberal Democrats, called for the visit to be scrapped. “Keir Starmer should advise the King that the state visit to the US scheduled for April should be called off. At a time when Trump has launched an illegal war that is devastating the Middle East and pushing up energy bills for British families, it’s clear this visit should not go ahead,” he said.
However, some believe the personal relationship between King Charles and President Trump is exactly why the visit should take place. “Unlike political leaders, Charles has the ability to engage Trump on a more personal level, and some believe that could open the door to more measured and constructive conversations,” one royal source told the outlet.
“That is precisely why the prospect of canceling the visit is being treated so seriously. Walking away would not just avoid a difficult situation – it would also eliminate any chance for that kind of direct, personal influence to be exercised.”
