It’s no secret jeans are a year-round wardrobe staple. All you need is a few pairs to set the foundation of your closet, but even just one pair can ring you up for quite a bit, with some popular brands selling jeans for over $100 a pop. So, what options are there if you can’t shell out a ton but still want solid denim? We asked two fashion stylists to spill the tea on the best jeans that are affordable but don’t compromise on style or quality—and their options deliver.
You might be wondering what we mean by “cheap” because everyone has a different definition of the word. For our experts and us, it means jeans that stay below $60, and if you’re really in a pinch, there are some extra budget-friendly picks that won’t cost you more than $30. Continue scrolling through this story for their product recommendations and advice on shopping for cheap jeans, like what to look for, what to avoid, which trends are emerging, and which brands to trust. Several of the pairs below are heavily marked down right now, so don’t let your shopping cart sit for too long!
Both of our fashion experts highlight fabric composition and quality as one of the most important things to consider when buying affordable jeans online. “When shopping for inexpensive denim, prioritize fabric composition, aiming for jeans that are at least 98% cotton, so they maintain structure and don’t feel overly thin. Look closely at seam quality and make sure the stitching is tight and even. A small amount of elastane helps the jeans retain their shape without stretching out too quickly. It’s also helpful to test the hardware, like buttons and zippers, to ensure they aren’t flimsy,” says Brown. Molina-Mulcahy echos these sentiments, noting shoppers should go for heavier-weight denim (stretch improves comfort and full cotton lasts longer), stitching, reinforced areas (like bar tacks or double stitches at stress points), and hardware.
While all of the above are more functional, don’t forget to also think about your preferred fit and style. It might take a little trial and error until you find your ideal cut and aesthetic, because as Molina-Mulcahy notes, “There’s no one size fits all when it comes to fashion, but especially not for jeans.” Do you go for a slim fit, a straight leg, a flared hem, or something completely different? Do you opt for a darker wash if you’re headed to the office or a trendy, distressed design for a more casual look? These choices are all up to you, and there are so many good ones on the market regardless of your preferences.
The flip side of quality jeans is denim that feels thin, overly stretchy, or papery, according to Brown. These traits might tell you the jeans are not super durable and will lose their shape quickly. You might want to skip overly distressed washes or heavy acid treatments, too. They could potentially show wear fast, especially when done at lower price points. “You should also steer clear of extremely inconsistent sizing and ultra-thin pocket fabric that can sag or warp with use,” she adds. Molina-Mulcahy is in agreeance, advising shoppers to look out for material, sloppy stiching, and unflattering cuts when you’re browsing online.
Once you have the basics down (like fabric and fit), you can’t skimp on style. What exactly is trending in the jeans scene this year? Per usual, the pros know best! “One of the biggest trends for 2026 is a return to clean, minimalist silhouettes, especially straight and trouser-inspired jeans with crisp lines,” says Brown. Molina-Mulcahy references Carolyn Bessette Kennedy as style inspiration for sleek, straight jeans silhouettes—something between “skinny and straight,” as Molina-Mulcahy puts it. “Subtly wide legs will continue to gain popularity, offering a relaxed but intentional shape,” Brown predicts. Molina-Mulcahy elaborates on this trend, saying that “Baggy jeans aren’t disappearing; they’re evolving into more structured, tailored versions with thoughtful pleating and shaping, blending comfort with sophistication. If styled with the right top they offer the perfect balance of elegance and edge.” Additionally, Brown declares, “Vintage-inspired dark rinses are also coming back, reflecting early-2000s premium denim. Sustainability remains influential, and many brands are leaning toward recycled cotton blends and low-water washes.”
I asked both of our experts for the brands and retailers they turn to for affordable denim. I wanted non-sponsored, ride-or-die recs, and they certainly delivered. Brown’s top picks are Old Navy, H&M, Uniqlo, and American Eagle. She explains, “I like shopping at Old Navy because the sizing is consistent, the quality is reliable for the price, and sales often bring pairs under thirty dollars. H&M is great for trendy silhouettes that still feel sturdy. Uniqlo offers minimal, durable denim with excellent fabric quality under fifty dollars. I also recommend American Eagle, especially for comfortable stretch denim that maintains its shape.”
Molina-Mulcahy has three different faves: ASOS Design, GAP, and Nordstrom. “I absolutely love ASOS DESIGN. They offer a wife range of denim at affordable prices, with lots of cuts and fits. The styles look super luxury and chic while remaining affordable,” she says. She also loves GAP’s comeback, citing it as a “tried-and-true” brand with “go-to styles that seem to never go out of style.” Lastly, Nordstrom, which offers an “endless selection of brands,” and can always be trusted to get the job done in terms of styles and fits that flatter your body.
